Bicycle sharing has really taken off in the past few years, especially after the Parisian Vélib model. I tried taking one in Nice, France last summer with my friend but we failed. You have to sign up online and we tried to do it at the stack of bicycles. They supposedly had a mobile service you could use but we couldn’t get it to work, even with my friend’s French cell phone and bank card. Also, we were stymied by the fact that we had a small child with us and there was neither a child seat nor a bicycle small enough for her to ride.
This photo shows a bicycle that someone has locked up just outside of the main bus station, about a stone’s throw from the nearest bicycle rack. Not sure what their logic is.
